Hungry Horse Dam – A Quick and Beautiful Detour On The Way To Glacier National Park

Distance from Mt. Forge: 1 hour 30 minute drive

If you’re heading up to or coming back from Glacier National Park then stopping at the Hungry Horse Reservoir is a must. It’s a short detour off of the highway and very easily accessible, not to mention spectacular. At 564 feet in height, the dam was the third largest and second highest concrete dam in the world at the time of its completion in 1953. You can park at the parking lot and walk across the dam. The reservoir is also a great spot for trout fishing & boating. There are also several hiking trails and small lakes close by that are used for ice fishing in the winter and camping/fishing in the summer.
